Home for the holidays
Nov 18, 2018DeHaas said. No need to take down those Chesapeake or nautical themed decorations; just add a festive ribbons, pine or plastic snowflakes, she said.
To update any fall or Thanksgiving decorations around the house, adding anything that is glittery or glass ornaments will instantly give it a winter feel, she said.
When it comes to decorating trees, DeHaas recommended determining what the focal point is and then designing around it. This doesn't necessarily need to the tree-topper, DeHaas said. It could be an ornament on the tree, or even an angel or large star placed in the middle of the tree.
The trees DeHaas designed at Homestead Gardens included a variety of themes like, whimsical, Santa Clause and even stuffed animals.
For those who want to experiment with their tree decorations, DeHaas said it's best to use a fake Christmas tree. When you places decorations on fake trees they stay— unlike real ones. She recommended using wire around the real trees to help with the stability.
For her own home, DeHaas likes to buy certain decorations by the dozen. This way, she can incorporate the decorations throughout the house and tie design elements together.
"It's like walking into your home and getting a hug," she said.
For outdoor decorations, in addition to any lights, DeHaas likes to place dwarf evergreens in empty planter pots. This way, her backyard doesn't look completely bare, she said.
Around the holiday season, most people like to stay traditional with their flowers, said Caroline Leslie, floral designer at The Gateway Florist. A majo... http://www.capitalgazette.com/capital_style/ph-ac-cs-cover-story-1113-20161113-story.html
Bel Air's Flowers By Design to close after 22 years on Main Street
Nov 4, 2018Upper Chesapeake Medical Center and decorating at Maryland Golf and Country Clubs.
Pearce said she is sad to leave the town and has enjoyed all her customers.
"Really, they have become friends," she said.
"I never wanted to be in a strip mall; I never wanted to be in Harford Mall. I love the feel of Main Street and when I opened, there weren't any cute [shops]" like hers, she said, explaining there were then, as now, many vacancies along the street.
"I took a chance. I was young; I was still in my 20s," she said.
Pearce, who is in her 50s and lives in Forest Hill, has also spent the past 22 years as a marshal for the Bel Air Christmas Parade. After she was invited back, she told the parade committee she would return to lead the parade next year.
Pearce said she always opened her store to let mascots in the parade, like the Oriole bird, get dressed there. This year's parade and tree lighting was Dec. 7.
She also decorated a number of local businesses, including barbershops. In 2010, Flowers By Design was named Bel Air's Business of the Year.
"My goal was always not to be just self-serving but to be good for everyone," she said.
Among town residents, downtown employees and visitors, Pearce's store became known for the colorful seasonal displays in her large front windows.
"Our windows are our No. 1 form of advertising," she said.
Pearce, who leases her building, said she had hoped her head designer would take over the business but that did not work out.
"Business is great and the town has been wonderful," she said, adding she hopes to see other creative stores stay afloat on Main Street.
"A lot of the big dollars come from lawyers, not artists like me," she said of the law firms that occupy many of the buildings along the street.

Chesapeake Chocolates to Take Over Lake Anne Florist Shop
May 22, 2018Linda Fuller retired both herself and her shop, Lake Anne Florist, last week.
The shop will reopen Saturday, Feb. 7 as an expanded Chesapeake Chocolates.
“She had talked about it for a while and I had thought about it for a while,” said Chesapeake Chocolates owner Doris Tyler.
Visitors from Reston and beyond who have been to Lake Anne Florist would have met Tyler - or smelled the chocolate - in a nook of the space. Fuller rented the space and subleased it to Tyler.
Tyler is both “excited and apprehensive” about the change.
“We’re not just expanding the chocolate shop,” she said. “We’re also expanding other items.”
Like Lake Anne Florist, Chesapeake Chocolates will offer giftables throughout the year.
Saturday is the same day as the annual Camp Sunshine Freezing for a Reason polar dip in the frigid Lake Anne waters. Tyler said 10 percent of the proceeds from grand opening sales that day will go to Camp Sunshine, a year-round camp dedicated to children with life-threatening diseases. The camp also offers bereavement sessions for families who have lost their children due to these illnesses.
The new Chesapeake Chocolates can be reached by phone at 703-620-0082. More information can also be found at http://cheschoc.com.
