PORTLAND, Ore. —
A Providence Portland worker is going the extra mile to help patients feel better during their stay.
Patrick Helling, a nutrition services supervisor, who runs a couple cafes at Providence, grows and delivers bouquets of flowers to patients who need a little extra cheer.
“All we want to do is make a patient’s day a little brighter, a little more pleasant, and just let them know that they’re cared about here,” Patrick said.
Patrick grows the flowers as part of the hospital’s Compassion Bouquet Project – something Patrick helped start three years ago and now directs.
Growing the flowers, he said, takes a lot of volunteer hours. Other Providence employees also grow, or donate vases for the program.
Patrick said that the compassion this program breeds inspired him to make it a part of training for his new employees.
