New school could end up south of I-94

Land options are not confined to limits of the city of West Fargo. Independence Elementary and the Osgood Kindergarten Center are already located in the city of Fargo. The school district includes residents of West Fargo, Harwood, Horace and parts of Fargo and rural areas. While the many of the district’s newest schools have been built south of I-94 where the cities of Fargo and West Fargo have seen rapid new growth, land in a developed area may have a higher price tag up front but it may not have longtime assessment costs that undeveloped land will have, Business Manager Mark Lemer said. The district owns 22 acres near 52nd Avenue South, and about 80 acres off County Road 17 near Horace, but both parcels lie in fairly undeveloped areas, Lemer said. “You have to consider the cost of true ownership overall. Florist adds dash of unconventional beauty

A West Fargo native, Ruhland graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree in landscape architecture in 2008, in the midst of an economic downturn. While job hunting, she signed up for classes at Koehler and Dramm’s Institute of Floristry in Minneapolis, and what began as a hobby soon developed into a full-time profession. After spending five years arranging flowers for weddings and events from her home, Ruhland opened Crapabble Floral’s downtown location in September 2013. Crabapple shares a Main Avenue storefront with ACO (A Creative Outlet), a gift shop that would not be out of place among the hipsters in Brooklyn, with the exception of the “I Heart Lefse” magnets and “Uff Da” dishtowels. Steph Smith, the owner of ACO, invited Ruhland to share her space when she was seeking a partner to keep the store open full-time. “It was a perfect fit because Kelsey does such creative things, and we were looking to bring something unique to downtown,” said Smith, who was attracted to the idea of displaying fresh flowers among her ACO merchandise. “We get a lot of creative people in the shop who might want to create something themselves, so, if somebody wants to stop in and make their own arrangement, Kelsey has a lot of unique flowers they can explore.” Crabapple is not affiliated with national wire services, such as Teleflora, which require florists to create standardized arrangements using set types of flowers and containers. Ruhland said, in summer, her arrangements tend to be more loose and relaxed, but she describes her winter arrangements as “more refined, with a contemporary edge.” “Floral design is artistic, and your style continues to grow and develop over time,” Ruhland said.
