Bright Elementary recognizes Veterans Day

School came to together with the community on Nov. 11 to honor the nation’s veterans. The assembly commenced with the presentation of the colors by Hillsboro Boy Scout Pack 37. It was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance recited by the entire group and was performed, in sign language, by fifth grade student Lily Walker. Principal Michael Bick greeted the crowd and introduced speaker Josh Book. Steven Berhardt presented and gave the meaning of the POW’s Table with a touching speech. The Bright Elementary Honor Choir, led by Rhiannon Moore, sang the Star Spangled Banner. Students Weston Blair, Brianna Hill and Claire Ames shared what veterans mean to them, reciting some impressive essays that they penned. Classes in the first, second, third and fourth grades sang patriotic songs. Veterans in attendance were recognized by the sixth grade class with a presentation of flowers. Sixth grader Evan DeAtley played Taps as Pack 37 retired the colors. Bright Elementary wishes to thank all of those that were able to attend this ceremony, as well as all veterans near and far. Longtime local florist Jean Head dies at 91

Story Tools: Social Media: Tweet Jean Head, whose flower and greenhouse business became a landmark presence in Hillsboro, died Thursday. She was 91. “Jean’s Flowers and Gifts” had its genesis in her parents’ garage and chicken coop in the 200 block of East Pleasant Street in the early 1950s. The buildings still stand there today. A 1961 advertisement in the Hillsboro Press Gazette announced the businesses’ relocation to North High Street, where it remained for more than three decades until 1995. A 1967 story in the News Herald noted that an annual Christmas open house celebration drew 1,500 people from far and wide. “Over 1,500 persons packed Jean’s Flowers and Gifts, North High St., during Jean’s two-day open house Saturday and Sunday,” read the story from Dec. 1, 1967. “Guests registered from all over southwestern Ohio, including Xenia, Dayton and Cincinnati. The event featured free refreshments and recorded seasonal music played throughout the buildings.” After her retirement from the North High Street business, she operated Jean’s Silk Floral Creations on Danville Pike at the edge of town. http://timesgazette.com/news/2122/longtime-local-florist-jean-head-dies-at-91

9th annual Pollinator Day celebration in Pittsboro on May 14

All Pollinator Day activities are free and open to the public. This event will be held rain or shine. Address for the event: 480 Hillsboro St. Pittsboro, NC 27312. Educational Programs You can hear presentations about beekeeping – how to get started, equipment needs, management tips – from expert beekeepers. Watch an expert beekeeper work an actual hive inside a bee cage (bees inside, participants outside!) and see honey bees up close and personal. Learn about what to plant in your garden to attract butterflies and bees and other pollinators. Sample delicious baked goods made with local honey and get recipes for how to cook with honey. Educational Program Schedule: (Programs will be in one of the tents on The Lawn at Chatham Mills in front of Chatham Marketplace in Pittsboro) The Beekeeping Demo in the Bee Cage will be ongoing throughout the morning. Show & Tell From 9:00 am-1:00 pm, feel free to visit the display tables and talk with our Chatham County beekeepers and learn all about what it takes to produce the nutritious and delicious local honey available at Chatham Marketplace. Sample different honeys and foods made with honey, handle beekeeping equipment, learn about native bees, watch new bees emerging from honeycomb, and get your burning beekeeping questions answered. Local author Annette Meredith will be there with copies of her book Saving the Bees. Pick up some educational literature to further your knowledge about honey bees, beekeeping, pollinators, and pollinator conservation. Learn about the Chatham County Beekeepers’ Association and how you can get involved with this fabulously friendly group through monthly meetings and field days and even an email listserv – we welcome members of all skill levels: from never-tried-it (but always wanted to) to beginner to experienced! Pollinator Garden Tour At 10:00 am, Cooperative Extension Agriculture Agent Debbie Roos will give a tour of Cooperative Extension’s Pollinator Garden at Chatham Mills and discuss how to attract and protect pollinators. The garden contains over 180 different species of perennials, most of them native to the piedmont of North Carolina. The garden provides three seasons of forage for bees and other pollinators.
