Gualberto C. Gokim Jr., M.D., 79, Bismarck, passed away Dec. 20, 2015, at Sanford Health with his wife and daughter at his side. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, 520 Raymond St., Bismarck, with the Rev. Monsignor Thomas J. Richter presiding. The Rev. Daniel Maloney, OSB will concelebrate with Deacon Doug Krebs assisting. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck. A rosary/vigil will begin at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Maloney presiding. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the church service. “Bert” was born Feb. 7, 1936, in Manila, Philippines, to Gualberto Sr. and Feliciana (Coson) Gokim. He attended San Beda College, then the University of Santo Tomas, College of Medicine, graduating in 1960. He passed his ECFMG examination, but opted to be a resident physician at Jose R. Florist has moved

Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. New candy shop Mike Iken opened Dakota Nuts-N-Candy, an old-fashioned candy store on Fourth Street in Bismarck. "I think it was something downtown was missing," said Iken, who opened the store during the Downtown Street Fair. Iken carries more than 50 varieties of nuts and candies from milk chocolate red velvet cherries to ranch and buffalo flavored peanuts to milk chocolate amaretto pecans. "The dark chocolate espresso beans are popular," he said, but he also carries natural nuts and items, including very berry antioxidant trail mix for people looking for something healthier. The store at 218 N. Fourth St., next door to the former Tribune building, is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Iken refurbished the space with a fresh coat of paint and polish and the old wood walls. He said the response from the community has been supportive. He thinks it's the nostalgia that has helped with his success. Iken said he gets lots of oohs and ahhs over his candies and several families have begun making regular trips to his store, coming for treats after school. "There's mothers and daughters and fathers and sons just walking down memory lane," he said. Iken said downtown has been a great location for his store because it catches a mix of the old and the new. "I felt like this was a cool location for a business like this," he said. Michael's is an arts and crafts store, and Ulta carries cosmetics. Willem de Rooij's Bouquet XI Is a Complicated Arrangement

It probably reaches 12 feet in the air. Bismarck palm fronds five feet in diameter spike out at the top and the sides, forming a shield around a proliferation of grasses, vines, and flowers: yellow acacia puffs, spines of chalky-green eucalyptus, white-tipped bunny-tail grass, vines sagging with tiny dates, and more. On the wall, a sign explains that the arrangement is a work of art called Bouquet XI, intended to evoke the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. All the plants are native to the contested lands in and around Israel, and several have strong allergenic properties. The artist, Willem de Rooij, has said that he's trying to make your nose run and your eyes water (he's allergic to pollen, too). I didn't have an allergic reaction during my brief visit, but I'm told that some of the gallery attendants have to take antihistamines just to come to work. De Rooij means his monumental bouquet to be a potent metaphor for cultural exchange and its discontents. But is he likening a little snot to a lot of spilled blood? Is he substituting a cleverly engineered itch for a catastrophe, triggering emotionless tears in the name of actual tragedy?
