Jan 23, 2022

New Bern since she moved here in 2014. Working for Harris Teeter, she transferred here from Wilmington and immediately began adding beauty to homes and events as the store's floral manager. Her body of work has made her a trusted expert on flowers — cut, grown and arrangement. For years, she has been doing flowers for the Heart Ball Executive Leadership Team for the Heart Association, decorating homes for the New Bern Women's Club Holly and the Ivy Home Tour, the Spring Home's Tour, Ghostwalk, Journey of Hope and several other local fundraising organizations.  She is also active with local garden and women's clubs, holding demonstrations and classes. "My love of flowers comes from my immigrant Italian grandfather," she said. "He was an avid gardener. Every inch of his yard in Queens Village (New York) was planted with fruit trees, vegetables and beautiful flowers." She was trained in design, merchandising, management and horticulture. After graduating from design school, she worked in various flower shops and had an internship in London, England.  Mary then embarked ... https://www.newbernsj.com/story/news/2021/09/12/harris-teeters-mary-gierie-merrell-offers-list-top-fall-flowers/5768602001/

Longwood lights up holiday for Wilmington kids

Dec 30, 2018

Hicks Anderson Community Center tour through Longwood Gardens' Christmas display Wednesday. The visit was organized by Wilmington Police Corporal Kennita Champion.(Photo: DANIEL SATO/THE NEWS JOURNAL)Buy Photo Eleven pairs of eyes grew wide as the Christmas lights at Longwood Gardens flipped on Wednesday afternoon. Most of the girls from the William "Hicks" Anderson Community Center and the Police Athletic League had never been to the holiday light show and garden in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Police officers from both community centers helped pull the special trip together for girls who showed positive progress on their report cards this semester, said Senior Cpl. Kenita Champion. Champion is stationed at the West Center City community center full time and has gotten to know the girls over the past six months. The afternoon served as a good opportunity to get the children out of their normal routines and experience something new, she said. "We have these city kids and most of them don't get to come out here," she said Wednesday as she trucked through the gardens in the pouring rain.
