'More kindness, less judgement' at Friday rally of allies

CAT MURPHY / The Murfreesboro Post Hundreds packed Murfreesboro Public Square in a show of community unity Friday afternoon, organized by Murfreesboro Muslim Youth. "Their goal was just to spread kindness, to show the community hey, we're here, we love you guys, and hopefully get the love back," said Rachel Sloan of Murfreesboro Support Alliance. Her group brought flowers and messages of solidarity to The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro a week prior. Murfreesboro Muslim Youth decided to return the favor Nov. 18. "This was the idea of one of our youth leaders," said organizer Abdou Kattih. "He said that basically we've been the recipients of love and care like the event...at the mosque, and he said it's time for us to go out there and show love and care." People moved through the crowd, talking and exchanging flowers, candy and balloons. Some chalked hearts and peace signs on the asphalt. Loyalist Flowers staff 'petal it forward' across...

Half the joy is receiving flowers, but the other half is giving flowers," said Loyalist Flowers owner Shelly Murphy while handing out the individually wrapped roses in Market Square. "The response has been so overwhelming. It is incredible. People think we are selling flowers so when we give them to them for free, they are so excited."
