Woman donates craft supplies to high school floral design class
Oct 12, 2018Chapel Hill High School offers a valuable program that began in 2011 for students with creative minds centered around floral design and flower arrangements. Art teacher Kimberly Taylor, daughter of a florist and professional artist, who naturally has a passion for the arts, teaches the program. Mrs. Taylor has been teaching art in schools for 18 years and was delighted at the thought of a floral design program at the high school.
“I think it’s very much of value to high school students, because it teaches them not only how to properly arrange an arrangement, but also the business aspect of it,” Mrs. Taylor said. “Right now we are learning how to make mums and how to price them.”
The Floral Design program is offered during fifth period and is heavily dominated by females, but does have a couple of male students that participate. According to Mrs. Taylor, the program has grown significantly since it started four years ago.

Plastic Flowers Bloom Like the Real Thing
Oct 5, 2018The special polymer, developed by scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Akron, could be used in a range of areas from biomedicine -- such as administering a patient's drug therapy -- to engineering -- such as building a spacecraft.
Other morphing materials exist. But they mainly require some kind of external trigger -- light, heat, water, a difference in pH level -- to set the changes in motion.
For this new material the trigger is internal.

In their scientific report, Xiaobo Hu and his colleagues give the analogy of the internal workings of a mechanical watch. A spring provides the energy, while the gears to regulate the energy's release.
For the shapeshifting material, the internal mechanisms are not springs or gears but two different networks of chemical bonds inside a hydrogel polymer.
One network is dynamic, possessing the energy that ultimately transforms the shape of the object. The other network flows at a predictable state, which can be used to control how quickly the object transforms.
