Patriots notebook: Trey Flowers seems ready to bloom | Boston Herald
Sep 14, 2018Thuney’s anticipated debut will occur tonight at left guard, but he is also prepared to play center in a pinch.
Thuney is in the mix to back up David Andrews in the wake of the Pats releasing Bryan Stork last month and Josh Kline last week. The third-round pick has practiced snapping prior to most recent practices in the event he’s needed as an emergency fill-in.
“I’ve been doing that for most of the fall,” Thuney said. “That helps a lot. Wherever the coach puts me is where I’ll play. I’m excited about playing anywhere.”
To reinforce the obvious, Thuney said the only adjustment is snapping the ball before getting to his block. He is already used to vocalizing the play calls because each lineman is responsible for that to an extent, and the blocking assignments don’t change that much, at least in terms of the types of defensive linemen who are across from the center and guards.
Thuney has been outstanding in the lead-up to his pro debut, perhaps having the best offseason of any lineman on the roster. Fellow rookie Ted Karras is the likely backup center tonight, but it could be Thuney’s responsibility upon guard Jonathan Cooper’s return from a foot injury, which could potentially make Karras a gameday inactive.
Either way, Thuney is ready.
“I’m really excited,” Thuney said. “I try not to think too much about it. I just focus on today and try to get a little better today than I was yesterday. It’s definitely awesome.”
Garoppolo’s gang all here
It shouldn’t be difficult to spot, or hear, the mass of Jimmy Garoppolo supporters tonight at University of Phoenix Stadium.
Not surprisingly, Garoppolo’s family was inundated with ticket requests for his first career start. They managed to hand out 16 tickets after whittling down the number from about 40.
Gisele takes Edelman role
Wondering exactly who is going to help Tom Brady keep his arm sharp during his suspension? Well, his wife seemed to offer an answer to that yesterday.
On her Instagram account, Gisele Bundchen posted a photo of her leaping to catch a pass from Brady — apparently in the family’s back yard — along with the message: “Don’t worry guys. I will keep him ready.” She added the hashtags: ?#Brady’scamp #IwillwhatIwant

Patriots Practice Observations: Trey Flowers, Chris Long's Roles Increase
Aug 15, 2018Former Patriots special teams coach Scott O’Brien was a guest at practice. He spent a long time talking to Belichick.
— David Andrews and Bryan Stork swapped reps with the first team at center. It appears that starting battle is ongoing. Shaq Mason remained at right guard while Josh Kline handled backup snapping duties.
— Receiver Nate Washington had his best practice of camp. He made five catches during team drills.
— Linebacker Dont’a Hightower and cornerback Cyrus Jones were credited with sacks during Brady’s 11-on-11 reps.
— Chris Hogan continues to stand out at wide receiver. He and linebacker Jonathan Freeny shed their red non-contact jerseys. That could mean Hogan will make his preseason debut Thursday against the Bears.
