Lessons in landscaping: City gardens demonstrate how to create a drought-tolerant oasis
Dec 22, 2018It’s a hot afternoon in late September, and the Glendora Library Garden is a riot of wildlife activity.
Monarch butterflies flit about the purple floral spires of “Santa Barbara” Mexican Bush Sage, honey bees visit the yellow daisy-like blossoms of a Chocolate Flower plant, and a small lizard hurries across the decomposed granite path into the silvery variegated Abelia Radiance, with its white clusters of fragrant trumpet-shaped flowers.
“Sometimes I hear from people who want to know how to attract certain pollinators, or bring in more color or textures, and this definitely shows them how to do it,” says Raquel Zepeda, park supervisor for the city of Glendora’s highly visible drought-tolerant garden that was unveiled in April using plants from local nurseries.

Anissa Rivera: 6000 roses highlight Rose Garden Tea
Nov 4, 2018What better place to host a rose garden tea than at the Singer Mansion in Glendora, where more than 6,000 roses will be in bloom in time for a fundraiser organized by the Glendora Woman’s Club.
The Rose Garden Tea is set from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 2 at the Singer Mansion, 820 N. Verano Ave., in Glendora. Woman’s club member Margaux Viera owns the home, which boasts one of the largest privately owned rose gardens in the country.
Admission is $45 per person. Proceeds will benefit club charities, according to Carolyn Cunningham, club president. Gates open at 10:30 a.m.
Janet Raymond, president of Pacific Rose Society, will speak about caring for roses and Angela Drouillard, owner of La Petit Fleur florist, will discuss floral arrangements. Ritz Catering will prepare the menu.
The historic, Wallace Neff-designed Singer Mansion was part of the estate of A.K. Bourne, who purchased it in 1932 and who was the heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune.
