Jan 23, 2022January 15, 2022 at Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester. He was the husband of Fran (Brown) Pierce and the late Meredith (Giles) Rand. Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Norman and Nathalie (Towle) Rand. He was a graduate of Beverly High School with the class of 1963 and earned his bachelor's degree from Salem State University in 1968. An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country during the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Army. He was proud of his service as a helicopter pilot and part of the 101st Airborne, B Troop, at Camp Eagle in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Distinguished Flying Cross for his dedicated service to his country. Norm was a kind and gentle man loved by his family and friends and was dedicated to his family. He never missed one of his grandchildren's games, recitals, or performances. He was a wonderful and caring father and husband. He loved playing golf, billiards and was unbeatable in trivia. He was famous for his perfect grilled steaks and homemade Caesar salads. Norm worked as a Financial and Estate Planner locally for many years, owned his own business, and enjoyed working with people from all walks of life. He had an infectious laugh that made everyone else laugh with him. He will be tremendously missed and those that knew him felt privileged to call him a friend. In addition to his wife Fran, he is survived by his son, Jonathan Rand and his wife Estelle of Beverly; two stepsons, Robyn Pierce of Ipswich and Rory Pierce of Oakland, CA and two grandchildren, Miles and Maggie Rand. His funeral services will be held privately. A Celebration of his Life will be held at a later date. Salem resident uses art for therapy, holiday cheer

SALEM — Carol Lee Johnson last studied art in seventh grade, but after a health setback several years ago, the 67-year-old Salem resident picked up some colored pencils and started drawing.
Now she’s using her creativity as a form of therapy, spreading Christmas cheer to friends and family with her homemade cards and drawings.
“If I can make them feel better, it helps me to feel better. It takes my mind off of the pain,” she said.
On Jan. 2, it will be six years since she entered a hospital and nearly died. Everyone she knew came to say their last goodbyes, but about two weeks later, she said she entered Essex of Salem for rehabilitation. She remained there for three months, then came home and kept getting better.

Flower price crashes at Salem markets
Nov 18, 2018The price of flowers crashed in the Salem markets following spurt in the arrivals.
The price of ‘gundu malli’ which stood at Rs. 200 per kg during last week dipped to Rs. 160 on Sunday. Similarly, the price of ‘sannamalli’ was priced at Rs. 140 on Sunday compared to Rs. 190 last week; ‘kanagambaram’ Rs. 200 compared to Rs. 300; ‘samanthi’ Rs. 40 compared to Rs. 100. The price of ‘sambangi’ was Rs. 25 per kg; ‘kakkattan’ Rs. 60; ‘kozhikondai’ Rs. 20.
A cross section of the traders of the VOC flower market in the city said that the markets in the district have witnessed heavy arrival of flower varieties such as sundu malli, sannamalli stock from Veeranam, Panamarathupatti, Pallipatti, Vazhakottapatti, thanks to good harvest season. The price of flowers is expected to go up with Deepavali festival, they added. Meanwhile, the weekly market at Konganapuram on Saturday witnessed a good demand for goats and chicken.
