He was 18 at the time. He stayed in that location for three years, then was approached by Realtor Harold Agee who said he had an ideal building on Manchester Avenue for rent. Agee told Conner: “You will be somebody. You will be successful.” But rent was $800, or $650 more than he was paying for the building on Central Avenue. Conner ordered $2,000 worth of business cards and stationary, then one night, overcome with fear, he tossed them in the trash can. Then he opened Flowers by Roger two months later. He works 60 hours a week, unless it’s a holiday week, then his hours double. He loves talking to customers, trying to match their desires with his unique designs. Some florists sell flowers. Conner sells his visions. “You know what is a great compliment?” he asked. “When someone says, ‘Did Roger do that?’ That means it’s out of the ordinary and I did that.” He doesn’t see any reason to stop either. He has talked to friends who have retired, and he doesn’t like their stories. He loves what he does. “After 40 years,” he said, “it’s a time for reflection. It has gone so fast. But I have no regrets. I don’t want to be in Chicago or Florida.” Conner is openly gay. He struggled throughout high school with his sexual preference. “Being gay wasn’t easy,” he said. But by the time he was in his early 20s, he was comfortable in his skin. He never thought he’d see the day when same-sex marriages were legal. Still, he’s a gay businessman in a straight world. He was asked if he ever thinks about how his sexual preference impacted revenue. “It doesn’t matter,” he said. “I’m still who I am.” With that, Conner walked to the front of the store, picked up a stack of phone orders, and headed to his design center.
