County, grieving mom, in talks over memorial removal
Dec 30, 2018Gerardo "Gap" Sierra, 22, both of Hollywood, died at the scene after their car hit a light pole, then the tree along the 3100 block of Sheridan Street on March 17, 2013.
Flowers and stuffed animals have adorned the makeshift memorial ever since. But the county said their policy never allowed it in the first place and a different memorial, such as a plaque, would be more appropriate. And, officials said, the county doesn't want to set a precedent.
"We need to start chatting," said Dan West, county parks director. "Hopefully we can work something out."
But he said it will eventually have to come down: "We will be pursuing that at some point."
Rachael Scandarion, mother of the driver, isn't convinced, saying no other tribute will do.
"It's not just a random tree; it's the gravesite, it's where they died," she said.
With the memorial removed, "it's just a tree again, it has nothing to do with our sons being buried there. Yes, I'll listen, I'm reasonable — if they will agree to allow us to keep the bench there and leave what's there," she said.
"In this matter there really is no compromise."

When Todd Sheridan planted 42 acres of sunflowers in his field at the Hwy 14 and Autauga County Road 33 intersection, he knew it would get some attention.
“I had no idea it would develop into something like this,” he said Wednesday afternoon, standing in the field that is about 6 miles west of Autaugaville.
The acres and acres of golden flowers have taken over social media. Facebook and Twitter posts abound of snapshots ... http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/story/news/local/progress/2016/07/14/autaugaville-sunflower-field-brightening-lives/87076718/
