Secret love life of birds | Part 2
Feb 2, 2018U-shaped flight pattern, while male red-winged blackbirds display their bright red wing patches to defend their territory.
Feeding: Sharing food is a common part of bird courtship. A male may bring a morsel to the female, which shows her that he can not only find food but is willing to share it. Northern cardinals are well known for this behavior.
Dancing: This ritual can take many forms such as wing flaps, head dips and fancy footwork. In many species, the male will dance for his female, while in others both dance. Mistakes during the dance show inexperience and most likely would not lead to successful mating.
Nest building: Some birds attract a mate by showing off their building skills. Constructing nests before the female arrives is a way for males to claim territory and show the female the nesting areas they can defend. They may also decorate the nest with pebbles, moss, flowers or even litter to make it more eye-catching. The female may then choose the nest she prefers or she may still build her own.
