Shoebox gift project fills a worldwide need
Dec 1, 2018Christmas Eves in my favorite pew. To be sure the memory will always be with me; a large watercolor of the church hangs in my home in Grand Rapids as it did at Posey Lake. I was one of the lucky visitors to be greeted with a beautiful floral lei made by women of the church.
The Rev Paul D. Tangonan and the congregation weave the Aloha spirit into the worship service from the time he arrives at the altar playing his ukulele until the closing Circle of Ohana. The stained glass windows are not ordinary Biblical art, but tropical plant leaves and birds of paradise.
Rev. Tangonan plays while teaching the congregation a hymn in native Hawaiian. A choir of men and women sing in their native Tongan language. To close the service everyone circles the interior of the church and holds hands, except two church members who join the pastor with their ukuleles. In very broken native Hawaiian we all sing “Hawaii Aloha” that is printed in the bulletin.

Local designer creates floral centerpieces for Dutch royal visit
Jun 1, 2018One of 100 floral arrangements created for Dutch royal visit by Events To Rent in East Lansing
LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Even as the Grand Rapids area gets ready for tomorrow’s visit of the King and Queen of the Netherlands, a florist in East Lansing is putting the finishing touches on his part of the festivities.
Scott Awad, co-owner of Events to Rent, is designing and creating 100 table centerpieces for tomorrow’s private luncheon and reception at Fredrick Meijer Gardens in suburban Grand Rapids. Awad is using pink roses called the “Amsterdam” and tulips in each of the arrangements.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima will attend a private reception and luncheon indoors, a ceremonial tree planting outdoors, and a performance in Meijer Gardens’ Amphitheater during a half-day visit that includes other Grand Rapids stops.
According to our media partners at MLive, the royals will plant a sugar maple tree, following the tradition established by the King’s grandmother Queen Juliana, in 1952, and mother Queen Beatrix, in 1982, both planted trees during their visits to Holland and Zeeland.
