He’s on a promotional tour of Kroger stores with Original Soupman CEO Jamieson Karson. They’ll be at the new Kroger at 20891 E. 13 Mile in Roseville passing out samples at 11 a.m. Jan. 17. Soupman soups, which the New York Times called “art, not soup,” recently became available at Kroger stores. The Soup Nazi rose to fame after a 1995 episode of “Seinfeld” in which Jerry, George and Elaine visited a new soup stand on Kramer’s recommendation. The episode and character is named “Soup Nazi” because of the strict requirements he puts on customers in regards to the ordering and paying process. Thomas was nominated for an Emmy Award for his “Seinfield” performance in the category of Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. Grandmother's Roseville vase a timely find

Q. I always read your column in our paper and saw the question on the Roseville vase. Interestingly, two weeks later I was looking in my cupboard for a vase and discovered that I had a Roseville vase; it was my grandmother's and I had forgotten about it. It is green, stands about 8 inches tall and is in very good condition. Marked on the bottom is the name "Roseville -- USA -- 683 -- 8." I had no idea that it had any value other than sentimental. Thank you for any information on my grandmother's vase. A. Roseville Pottery Co. made your pottery vase. They were founded in Roseville, Ohio, in 1890 and moved to Zanesville, Ohio, in 1894. Your vase is an example of their "Gardenia" pattern that was introduced in 1950. It was produced in a large variety of pieces, including vases, jardiniares, bookends, candlesticks, cornucopia vases, bowls, wall pockets, baskets and ewers. Gardenia was available in tan with orange tinge, gray and green finishes. The flowers and leaves were in relief. Roseville sets up DDA for Utica/Gratiot neighborhood

Mega-malls and strip shopping centers come and go, but the stores around Utica Road and Gratiot Avenue in Roseville have always had their own unique identity. Now Roseville officials want to help the area take the next step into becoming a vibrant, walkable community with the creation of a Downtown Development Authority. They hope a DDA can work with property owners to make the area a destination for food and shopping. “That’s a pretty cohesive neighborhood to begin with, so we hope a DDA can be used as a tool to revitalize the area and bring in additional business,” said City Manager Scott Adkins. The DDA district primarily the Gratiot and Utica corridors from Martin to 12 Mile roads, with only the frontage properties being taxed.
