Iconic 'green house' one of the oldest in Metairie
Dec 30, 2018It is dedicated to the memory of Irene Loup Bertaut, who passed November 6. 2013 at the age of 92.
The Canone brothers purchased a large track of Old Metairie property on Labarre at Metairie Road in 1922. The 4.1 acre piece of property was purchased by the industrious Canone Brothers for $9,200. The property was a large tract of land that included all of Elvis court, and all of the Bertaut property, including a large house and an apartment building, on the corner of Labarre and Metairie Road, across the street from what is now B's Café.
The Canone Brothers ran a successful nursery business at that corner for years, selling flowers and plants to funeral homes, restaurants and fine homes all over town. The Canone Brothers worked hard their whole lives never married.
John Denis Loup, Irene Bertaut's father, once lived in Argentina where he ran an auto dealership. Eventually, he came back to Metairie to establish a home. A real estate agent showed him a place on East Livingston. Loup was appalled. He would never own a house that faced the back of other people's houses. Then Loup found the large track of land on Labarre at Metairie Road owned by the Canone Brothers.
