Flowers Grown in Cedar Rapids Win Awards

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - Two orchids grown at the city-run Noelridge Greenhouse in Cedar Rapids won national awards at the Suburban Chicago Orchid Show last weekend. The Phalaenopsis (moth orchid) Taipei Gold x Buena Cerise Sparks was pulled for American Orchid Society judging and received a Highly Commended Certificate for flower quality and a Certificate of Cultural Merit for superior cultivation characteristics. A description of the plant and flower will be entered in the national database for this orchid hybrid and can be referenced worldwide. This orchid is over 20 years old and had 35 flowers on six blooming stems. The second orchid, a pink blooming Cymbidium, received the Best Cymbidium in the Show. The flowers are part of the Noelridge Greenhouse’s tropical orchid collection. The Eastern Iowa Orchid Society entered the flowers into the competition.
