Falling behind in the great Train Race

Dec 30, 2018

Starlight in Santa Barbara or in San Luis Obispo via the Surfliner. I’ve ridden the Surfliner to the Burbank Airport, and it’s incredibly easy, to San Diego and to the Los Angeles Union Terminal, where in 1949 my sister and I disembarked from Ohio via Chicago to visit a great aunt. We rode the Southern Pacific one way, the Union Pacific the other on famously-named trains. Dining cars had linen table cloths, silverware and vases of flowers. What a way to see America! In recent years I’ve taken the Southwest Chief cross-country, L.A. to Chicago and back. Now, here’s the rub. Some underdeveloped countries have better train service than the United States. Japan has bullet trains, Europe as well and at convenient times. Swiss trains run on time to the very second. China’s train service makes us look third world. American large-city commuter rail is good, but we can’t hop on cross-country rail for an eastern destination from L.A. or San Francisco but once a day. The Coast Starlight, generally late, between L.A. and Seattle, is only once daily, and if transferring to the Capitol Limited in Chicago from the Southwest Chief for more eastern destinations, again once daily, one must wait several hours. After riding the Surfliner and the Southwest Chief and experiencing the spectacular scenery — sans the nerve-wracking driving headaches in carbon emitting cars — one speculates, why isn’t the train the norm? Why have we not streamlined the train service that our country once had, and why haven’t we had a California bullet train up and running for years. And on this, the last day of 2015, we would like to thank the readers of the Forward View, and wish you a happy new year. Now it is on to 2016. http://lompocrecord.com/news/opinion/editorial/commentary/forward-view/falling-behind-in-the-great-train-race/article_5c53b4f9-f0ba-5c4b-82a4-397df2c6c60f.html
