Tiger tale: A gift to remember
Mar 11, 2018Rinkhan, a 3-year-old, 550-pound male Bengal tiger. Their meeting took place at Marine World Africa USA (still in Redwood City at the time). It was a family adventure for sure, with lots of photos to prove it. Not only should you not try this at home, you can’t even do it at the theme park anymore; subsequent events, shall we say, resulted in the banning of this kind of photo-op. We were lucky.
Back story, part 2: A few years later, a national florists chain sponsored a Valentine’s Day poetry contest. Interested poets should not only express their devotion in rhyme, they should also mention their loved one’s favorite flower. I entered. I didn’t win any prizes, but I had one more poem I could share with you when the time came.

The Lady and the Tiger
“Oh, anything for you,” purred
she,
“I’d even climb the Eiger.
But please don’t ask me to say
yes
To breakfast with a tiger!”
Yet, when her birthday early
dawned
She went (to all the Fates’ gall?)
And met the zoo’s most fearful
host,
That mighty beast of Bengal.
Two trainers and an iron chain,
And iron rules to pet by …
My cat’s meow is with me still
(With pics to break cold sweats
by!!).
Was love as blind as our first
date?
Could she not see this coming?
That I would honor, yet obey
The urge to keep life humming?
My kitten holds the keys to love:
She loves me, willy-nilly.
My purr-rect mate’s most perfect
bloom?
Please send a tiger lily.
